THE FIRST THREE STEPS

Start with the
fundamentals.

Whether your Ledger device is brand new or you are simply getting familiar, this guide walks through a thoughtful setup. There is no need to rush—security is built one careful decision at a time.

01

Get Ledger Wallet

Install Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live) from the official Ledger website or your device’s verified app store. Check the publisher and URL carefully before downloading. The app helps you manage accounts and connect to your Ledger signer; it never replaces the security of your recovery phrase.

02

Set up your device

Power on your Ledger hardware wallet and follow the instructions on its screen. Choose a PIN that is difficult to guess and keep it private. Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. Write each word down in order, check it carefully, and store it offline somewhere secure.

03

Verify and get familiar

Use Ledger Wallet to check that your device is genuine and explore its security checklist. Take time to understand how account addresses and on-device transaction approvals work before moving any assets. Start with a small test transfer only when you feel confident.

YOUR MOST IMPORTANT BACKUP

One phrase.
All the power.

Your 24-word recovery phrase is the master backup for your crypto accounts. Anyone who has it may be able to access your assets, so treat it like the keys to a vault—not like a password you can reset.

01

Never share it

Ledger will never ask you to type your recovery phrase into a website, app, support chat, or phone call.

02

Keep it offline

Write it down and store it somewhere private and protected. Avoid photos, cloud storage, email, and messaging apps.

03

Trust your device screen

Check transaction details on your Ledger device itself. Approve only what you recognize and intend to do.

A GOOD FOUNDATION

Getting started
is about more
than setup.

Taking control of digital assets can feel like a big leap. A hardware wallet gives you a way to keep your private keys under your control, while a companion app makes it easier to view accounts and manage everyday activity. Together, they help you take a more deliberate approach to self-custody. The most useful first step is simply learning what each part does.

Your Ledger device is designed to keep private keys isolated from an internet-connected computer or phone. When you initiate an action, the details are sent to the device for you to review. You then confirm or reject it using the device itself. This physical check is important: an app can display information, but sensitive approvals should always be verified on your trusted device screen.

During setup, your device creates a recovery phrase that can restore access if the device is lost, damaged, or replaced. This phrase is not a customer-support code and it is not meant to be shared. Write it down accurately, store it privately, and make sure no one can photograph or copy it. If a person or website asks you to enter those words, stop. Treat unexpected urgency, giveaway promises, and unsolicited support messages as warning signs.

After setup, spend a little time exploring the wallet app before making a transaction. Learn how to find an account, receive assets, and confirm the address shown on your device. If you choose to transfer crypto, consider a small test amount first and understand network fees and address formats. Cryptocurrency transactions are generally irreversible, so careful verification is more valuable than speed.

Security is an ongoing habit, not a one-time screen. Keep your device and apps up to date using official channels, use a unique PIN, and pause before approving unfamiliar prompts. Bookmark trusted Ledger resources rather than following links in unsolicited messages. You are responsible for safeguarding your recovery phrase and deciding what actions to authorize; no support agent can safely do that for you.

There is no need to learn everything in one sitting. Start with the official setup flow, review the security basics above, and return to Ledger’s help center or Ledger Academy whenever a question comes up. A calm, informed start helps you make choices at your own pace—and keeps control where it belongs: with you.
